DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z April 29, 2010

Southeast/Lower Mississippi Valley/Southern Plains:
Numerous fires are burning across the region producing anywhere from
light to dense smoke. Several fires across Georgia and Alabama are
emitting moderately dense smoke moving east into other states (South
Carolina/Florida) and the Atlantic Ocean.

Mississippi Valley/Upper Great Lakes/Ohio Valley/Tennessee Valley:
Residual smoke seen earlier today cannot be seen in satellite imagery
this evening.

Southern California/Southern Nevada/Northern Arizona/Northwest New
Mexico/Colorado:
A significant area of blowing dust is being picked up across parts of
NE Arizona and NW New Mexico and moving ENE across a large section
of Colorado and beginning to reach parts of W Nebraska and Kansas.
There are very high winds across the region.

A smaller area of blowing dust can be seen in parts of SE California
and S Nevada. The dust from this area is beginning to reach parts of
northern Arizona.

Earlier Today:
Mississippi Valley/Upper Great Lakes/Ohio Valley/Tennessee Valley:
An elongated area of light to pockets of moderately dense residual
smoke is moving east across parts of eastern Minnesota and into western
Wisconsin. The smoke extends south across parts of central/eastern Iowa,
Missouri, most of Illinois (except for the NE sections), southern Indiana,
western Kentucky/Tennessee and northern Arkansas. This area of smoke
is moving ESE. The area of smoke is most likely from the fires burning
across parts of Nebraska, Kansas, the Dakotas and southern Canada.
Numerous fires burned yesterday with many of them emitting light to
moderately dense smoke.

THE FORMAT OF THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS BEING MODIFIED. IT WILL NO LONGER
DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE
PLUMES ARE DEPICTED IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

JPEG: http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/ml/land/hms.html
GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm
KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THESE CHANGES OR THE SMOKE TEXT
PRODUCT IN GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
