DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0030Z April 30, 2010

Southwest/Plains/Southern Rockies:
An area of significant dust/sand is blowing across sections of the
Southwest US into the Southern and Central Plains. The dust/sand is
originating from SE Arizona, S New Mexico and N Mexico (just south of
Arizona/New Mexico Border) and is moving across parts of W Texas into
the Panhandle, W Oklahoma and into W/C Kansas. The most dense dust/sand
is blowing across a large section of S and E New Mexico and W Texas
(Panhandle included).

Southeast/Mississippi Valley:
Numerous fires are burning across the region with mostly light to
moderately dense smoke being produced. Most smoke plumes are moving
toward the N. A large majority of smoke producing fires are located in
the states of Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi.

Eastern Nebraska/Western and Central Iowa/Minnesota:
The dust/sand seen earlier today is now located across section of W
Iowa and S Minnesota. The origin of this dust/sand was NE Arizona/NW
New Mexico.

J Kibler

Earlier Today:

Eastern Nebraska/Western and Central Iowa:
Dust originally from NE Arizona/NW New Mexico is now spreading across
parts of E Nebraska and N and C Iowa. The area of dust today is much
smaller and not as dense.

THE FORMAT OF THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS BEING MODIFIED. IT WILL NO LONGER
DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE
PLUMES ARE DEPICTED IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

JPEG: http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/ml/land/hms.html
GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm
KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THESE CHANGES OR THE SMOKE TEXT
PRODUCT IN GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
