DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z May 4, 2010

Gulf of Mexico to the Southeast Atlantic Coast:
A broad area of Light to isolated moderate smoke from fires in Mexico
covers much of the Gulf and Bay of Campeche and stretched northeastward
along and ahead of a frontal boundary into the northeast Gulf, across
northern Florida and into the Atlantic off the southeast coast of Georgia
and northeast Florida. The area in the eastern Gulf and western Atlantic
may also be mixed with blowing dust that originated from the Sahara. The
smoke is from the numerous fires burning in the Yucatan and Guatemala.

Northwest US:
A vigorous storm system is circulating strong winds across portions of
the Pacific Northwest into the intermountain region. The winds are causing
areas of blowing dust. The most prevalent and widespread arwas of blowing
dust were from south central Washington eastward across northern Idaho
and into northwest Montana. Another area was over south central Oregon
and extended east into southwest Idaho. Smaller, more localized areas
of dust were seen from west central Nevada near Lovelock and extending
eastward into the central part of the state and also over southwest Utah,
north of Milford where the dust was moving to the north.

THE FORMAT OF THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS BEING MODIFIED. IT WILL NO LONGER
DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE
PLUMES ARE DEPICTED IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

JPEG: http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/ml/land/hms.html
GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm
KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THESE CHANGES OR THE SMOKE TEXT
PRODUCT IN GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
