DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0400Z June 13, 2010

Alaska/Northwest Canada:
An area of light to moderately dense remnant smoke was seen over much
of the north slope of Alaska and extending into the adjacent Arctic
waters. An arm of the smoke extended toward Banks Island in the Beaufort
Sea. Another arm of the smoke, which is moderately dense, stretched
from the western end of the Brooks Range southeastward into the Koyukuk
National Wildlife Refuge and near Galena.

An area of what is believed to be thin smoke dropping southeast off the
Aleutians into the Gulf of Alaska just southwest of Kodiak Island.

North Central Canada:
Numerous large wildfires were burning this evening over northern
Saskatchewan and eastern Northwest Territories. Most of this area was
covered in smoke, with large areas of moderately dense and dense smoke
near the fires. Most of the smoke was lifting to the north.

Nevada:
An area of blowing dust was seen over northwest Nevada in Churchill
county near Carson Sink and Dixie Valley. The dust was moving south.

North Carolina:
Numerous fires were observed over northeast North Carolina on both sides
of Albemarle Sound with a patch of light smoke drifting to the east out
over the Atlantic.

Eastern Canada:
Several large wildfires over central Quebec east of James Bay were
producing moderately dense to dense smoke plumes that were drifting to
the east southeast, but not reaching the St Lawrence by sunset.

THE FORMAT OF THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS BEING MODIFIED. IT WILL NO LONGER
DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE
PLUMES ARE DEPICTED IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

JPEG: http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/ml/land/hms.html
GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm
KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THESE CHANGES OR THE SMOKE TEXT
PRODUCT IN GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
