DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1515Z July 09, 2010

Eastern US:
A large area of thick aerosol continues to cover much of the Northeast,
Mid-Atlantic, Ohio Valley, Southeast, and Gulf States ahead of a front
draped across Michigan, Indiana and into Missouri and Oklahoma this
morning. Smoke contribution to this area of aerosol is not believed to
be significant.

Gulf of Mexico:
Light area of what is likely Saharan dust and other aerosols continues
to remain over the western gulf, eastern Texas and Louisiana.

Central Canada:
Fires in northern Saskatchewan continue to emit moderate to heavy dense
smoke that is moving to the east-southeast. The moderate to dense
smoke extends from the fires through central and southern Manitoba into
southwest Ontario province. Remnant light smoke continues northeast across
James Bay and southern Hudson Bay into northeastern Quebec Province.

British Columbia:
Remnant moderately dense smoke from a fire in northern British Columbia
extends just into southern Yukon as it remains mostly stationary with
only a slight southward jog. Cloud cover is preventing detection of
continues smoke emission of the fire.

Alaska:
Area of light smoke seen across much of northern Alaska into Northern
Nunavut Province from fires in northwest Alaska which are still emitting
higher concentrations of smoke this morning.

THE FORMAT OF THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS BEING MODIFIED. IT WILL NO LONGER
DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE
PLUMES ARE DEPICTED IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

JPEG: http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/ml/land/hms.html
GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm
KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THESE CHANGES OR THE SMOKE TEXT
PRODUCT IN GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
