DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0046Z August 2, 2010

Central Canada:
Moderately to dense smoke continues to be emitted due east from many of
the large fires across N Saskatchewan. This mixes in with yesterday's
output which is a bit SE of the fires sources and is moving E and
SE under the influence of small shortwave trof now enter James Bay.
As such smoke consolidates along the SW periphery of the cyclone and
becomes dense in a narrow band across SW Ontario into NE Ontario (across
Lake Nipigon to Kirkland Lake ON). Moderate smoke also connects up on
the NW periphery of the shortwave and is influenced by a weak frontal
boundary across Southern Hudson Bay just N of the Belcher Islands.

British Columbia/Washington/N Oregon:
Dense smoke from the numerous fires in the central mountains of BC
continues its trek across W WA now entering the northern counties of
OR.... moderate smoke extending back to the source fires (which are
starting to heat up significantly again with dense smoke. A thin wisp
of smoke can be seen near Boise, ID as well
the SW Sawtooth ranges.

E Canada:
A pocket of thin smoke ahead of the cyclone near James Bay continues to
fade out covering much of the entrance to the St. Lawrence Seaway and to
Ile Anticosti. This smoke was from the same Saskatchewan fires emitted
at the end of last week.

Dust/Sand:
Loose soils and sand across the SW portions of Jefferson county into
the Idaho Nat'l Engineering and Environmental Lab (likely due to loss
of grasses from the prairie fires earlier this month) is in a 25km wide
plume moving NE and extending to the WY boarder near Yellowstone NP.

THE FORMAT OF THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS BEING MODIFIED. IT WILL NO LONGER
DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE
PLUMES ARE DEPICTED IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

JPEG: http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/ml/land/hms.html
GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm
KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THESE CHANGES OR THE SMOKE TEXT
PRODUCT IN GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
