DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z September 3, 2010

Eastern US through southeastern US:
Aerosols and haze was observed this evening off the eastern seaboard
as well as through the TN Valley and southeastern US just ahead of
the approaching front. Some light smoke might be mixing in through the
southern US where numerous agricultural fires have been burning over
the past few days.

California/Nevada:
An area of light smoke can be seen near the CA/NV border tonight. This
is attributed to the wild fire in eastern/central CA that has been
burning for several days as well as a few other fires just south of Lake
Tahoe. This is all moving northward.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.

Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.

A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.

Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
