DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z September 6, 2010

Southeast Canada:
An area of thin aerosol of unknown composition and origin was lifting
northeast across coastal Nova Scotia and southeast Newfoundland this
evening.

Idaho/Northwest Utah:
The area of blowing dust originating in eastern Butte county Idaho
continued to be seen throughout the day and was still present this
evening. This area of dust is stretched to nearly 120 miles today reaching
into Madison and Gallatin counties in southwest Montana. Southeastward
moving cloud cover has obscured the plume of blowing dust though since
just after 2300Z.

Another area thinner blowing dust can be seen originating in Owyhee and
Twin Falls counties in southwest Idaho extending east and southeast. Some
of this dust may have been transported into northwest Utah as an aerosol
can be seen moving across the Great Salt Lake this evening. Or the high
winds associated with passage of a cold front across Utah may have picked
up additional blowing dust or salt from the deserts west of the lake,
given that some type of aerosol is seen spreading south of the Bonneville
Salt Flats.

Lower Mississippi River Valley:
Numerous agricultural fires burning along the Mississippi River in
Arkansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee were producing
a plethora of smoke plumes. This smoke was gradually being lifted north
and northwestward.

THE FORMAT OF THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS BEING MODIFIED. IT WILL NO LONGER
DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE
PLUMES ARE DEPICTED IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

JPEG: http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/ml/land/hms.html
GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm
KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THESE CHANGES OR THE SMOKE TEXT
PRODUCT IN GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
