DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z September 7, 2010

Mississippi Valley:
Numerous agricultural fires across the Mississippi Valley are producing
a large area of light smoke moving northward across eastern Arkansas,
southeastern Missouri, southern Illinois, western Mississippi, western
Tennessee and western Kentucky.

Colorado and Nebraska:
An area of light smoke is seen stretching from north/central Colorado
to eastern Nebraska with an embedded area of heavy smoke reaching
northeastern Colorado. The smoke is originated from a wildfire burning
west of Boulder, CO and is moving eastward.

Central California:
A wildfire in east central California county of Tuolumne is producing
moderately dense to dense smoke moving south to southeast from the source.
Lighter smoke is moving east into Nevada and flaring out through the
San Joaquin Valley.

DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
