DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1645Z September 29, 2010

Mississippi Valley:
Light remnant smoke from yesterday's numerous ag burns was seen in
early morning visible imagery across portions of eastern Arkansas,
western Mississippi, and northeastern Louisiana.

South Dakota and Iowa:
A narrow plume of light to moderate smoke was moving southeast across
southern South Dakota and north central Iowa.  This is likely remnant
smoke from yesterday's fires in the western United States.

Coastal Louisiana:
Although not detached, light with isolated moderate smoke from fires
along the coast near Lake Charles extended well into the Gulf of Mexico.

Utah and Arizona:
Although not detached light and moderate with isolated heavy smoke from
fires in south central Utah covered much of southern Utah and northern
Arizona.

THE FORMAT OF THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS BEING MODIFIED. IT WILL NO LONGER
DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE
PLUMES ARE DEPICTED IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
