DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1800Z October 11, 2010

Gulf Coast/Florida/Southeast US Coast:
An area of thin remnant smoke from the numerous ag burns that have been
going on along the Mississippi River and the Gulf Coast was observed today
over the north central and northeast Gulf of Mexico, northern Florida,
and along and off the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina.

Mid Atlantic Coast:
A frontal boundary draped east to west across the northern Mid-Atlantic
region has kept a large amount of thin to moderate density smoke and
possibly other unknown aerosols just to its south. Most of this remnant
smoke originated from the fires in the northern US Plains and south
central Canada and has traveled east and southeast over the past few days.

Illinois/Missouri/Indiana:
A small amount of thin smoke could be seen in GOES-W imagery this
morning traveling northeast across southeast Missouri, south Illinois,
and towards southwest Indiana. Likely this smoke is from the ag burns
along the Mississippi River yesterday.

Dakotas/Minnesota/Manitoba:
Two patches of very thin remnant smoke, one over the Minnesota/North
Dakota/Manitoba border and the other over southern South Dakota/southern
Minnesota, likely came from the same source, the ag fires yesterday in
the Dakotas and south central Canada. The one over South Dakota/Minnesota
is being pulled southward by an upper low over the Central US Plains.

THE FORMAT OF THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS BEING MODIFIED. IT WILL NO LONGER
DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE
PLUMES ARE DEPICTED IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

JPEG: http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/ml/land/hms.html
GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm
KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST.

ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THESE CHANGES OR THE SMOKE TEXT
PRODUCT IN GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
