DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0330 November 3, 2010

Northwest Pacific/British Columbia coasts:
A large area of thin smoke was observed in this evening's imagery drifting
northwestward off of Vancouver Island and Washington state.  Another area
was seen to the north along the British Columbia coast.  This smoke
is believed to have originated from the fires in British Columbia,
Washington, and Oregon.  A smaller area of smoke off of the northern
California coast is believed to be from the southwestern Oregon fires.

Western Gulf of Mexico:
A small area of aerosol, believed to be remnant smoke, was observed off
of the Texas coast.  The source of this aerosol is assumed to be from
the fires in the central and southern Plains.

Great Lakes:
A medium-sized area of aerosol is located around lower Michigan.
The source of the aerosol, believed to be remnant smoke, is from the
fires in the Midwest and Ohio River Valley.

SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST. THE SMOKE TEXT PRODUCT IN
GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
