DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 2345Z November 16, 2010

Central Valley of California
An area of remnant, thin smoke was observed moving southward from near
Sacramento through the Central Valley to near Bakersfield. This smoke
can be attributed to the numerous agricultural and prescribed burns
in northern California over the past two days. Other aerosols and
pollution may also be mixed in with the smoke.

South Florida
An area of remnant, thin smoke was observed moving east into the Atlantic
Ocean off of the south coast of Florida. This area of smoke is believed
to be from the numerous agricultural burns south of Lake Okeechobee.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
