DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z March 7, 2011

Central and South Central US:
Numerous fires were detected especially across portions of eastern Kansas
and eastern Oklahoma. Fires were also scattered over central, eastern,
and southern Texas as well as southern Louisiana. Smoke was visible with
some of the fires primarily over eastern Oklahoma, southeastern Texas,
and southwestern Louisiana. However, cloudiness moving across the region
interfered with smoke detection so it is likely that more smoke was
present particularly over eastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas than
indicated in the graphics on the web sites listed below.

Hawaii:
Reports from the USGS indicated a fissure eruption occurred yesterday
approximately 2 kilometers to the west-southwest of Pu'u'O'o,
associated with the Kilauea Volcano on the southeastern portion of the
Big Island. Aerial photos showed some of the lava from this eruption
burning forest vegetation. Satellite imagery showed extensive cloudiness
over the volcano so no smoke was visible in satellite imagery. A fire
was included in the analysis to account for the possibility of continued
burning vegetation.

THE FORMAT OF THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS BEING MODIFIED. IT WILL NO LONGER
DESCRIBE THE VARIOUS PLUMES THAT ARE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES. THESE
PLUMES ARE DEPICTED IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

JPEG: http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/ml/land/hms.html
GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm
KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html

THIS TEXT PRODUCT WILL CONTINUE TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF SMOKE
WHICH HAVE BECOME DETACHED FROM AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE
SOURCE FIRE, TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. IT WILL ALSO
STILL INCLUDE DESCRIPTIONS OF BLOWING DUST. THE SMOKE TEXT PRODUCT IN
GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THESE CHANGES OR THE SMOKE TEXT
PRODUCT IN GENERAL SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
