DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0315Z June 04, 2011

Southern US and Middle Mississippi Valley/Ohio Valley:
A large area of light to moderately dense smoke, likely originating
from the Wallow and Horseshoe 2 wildfires in Arizona, can be seen
circulating over the majority of the southern US due to a high pressure
system. In addition to the probable point source in Arizona, there is an
smoke contribution from agricultural burns in Arkansas, Louisiana, and
Mississippi. The heaviest smoke was visible this evening over southern
Illinois/Indiana southward through western Tennessee.

Carolina Coast/Atlantic Ocean/Gulf of Mexico/Southeast US:
Smoke is stalled along a frontal boundary that is extending from Georgia
eastward to the Atlantic Ocean. Remnant smoke from the Pains Bay fire
in North Carolina, the wildfire in Flagler County, FL, and the Durfee
fire in the Okefenokee Swamp, GA are also contributors to the large area
of light smoke present in the southeast. This smoke is also becoming
wrapped in the high pressure circulation.

Arizona:
The Wallow and Horseshoe 2 wildfires both continue to emit large amounts
of dense smoke. The smoke is moving to the northeast and appears to
have traveled into the central and southern US.

Baffin Bay/Quebec:
An area of aerosol believed to be remnant smoke from the fires in Alberta
is moving across Baffin Bay toward Greenland. This aerosol also extends
as a thin line through northern Quebec.

Alaska and Northwestern Canada:
Light smoke continues to extend from northeastern Alaska, along the
Yukon/Northwest Territories border. A fire in central Yukon is also
contributing smoke in the region.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
