DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1730Z June 30, 2011
Central United States: A broad area of light to moderate dense smoke primarily from two wildfires burning in New Mexico covered most of the central United States this morning. The smoke appears to be rotating around a mid-level high pressure system centered over Missouri and Arkansas. The smoke travels north through Colorado, Nebraska and the Dakotas before it heads south down the Mississippi River Valley. Remnant smoke is then seen across the northern Gulf of Mexico heading west into Texas. Some areas of dense smoke were viewed this morning over central Texas as well. Carolina Coast/Atlantic Ocean: The Juniper Road fire in Pender County, NC continues to emit dense smoke this morning. The smoke plumes are generally moving offshore and away from land; however, some heavy smoke is lingering near coastal areas. Alabama/Gulf of Mexico: The Possum Road fire in Baldwin County, AL produced dense smoke this morning. Most of this smoke moved away from land and into the Gulf of Mexico. Cloud cover across much of Canada and Alaska made smoke detection difficult this morning.
