DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1730Z July 2, 2011
Midwest/Southern US: A broad area of light to moderately dense smoke covered most of the the Mid Mississippi Valley, Ohio Valley and southeastern states this morning. Most of the smoke originated from the large wildfires burning in New Mexico. A line of heavier smoke was observed in central Illinois, moving to the east. The smoke appears to be circulating around high pressure in the mid-levels. Carolina Coast/Atlantic Ocean/Gulf of Mexico: The Juniper Road fire in Pender County, NC continues to produce a large moderately dense to extremely dense smoke plume this morning that extends along the Atlantic Coast southward to northern Florida. Most of the heavier smoke is offshore; however, smoke is moving westward and towards the coast. Lighter smoke also extends across the northern Gulf Coast towards portions of Louisiana. The smoke over the Gulf is moving to the west as well. New Mexico/Colorado: Heavy smoke from the wildfires around Los Alamos, NM was viewed this morning in Rio Arriba, Los Alamos, Santa Fe and San Miguel Counties in New Mexico. Moderately dense smoke extended northward into portions of southern and eastern Colorado. Alberta/Saskatchewan: An area of light to locally moderately dense smoke extended from northern Alberta and Saskatchewan this morning. The source for this smoke is likely the continuing wild fires in the Lake Athabasca area along the northern Alberta/Saskatchewan border.
