DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z July 7, 2011

Canada:
A area of light smoke extends from the border of Northwest Territories
and Nunavut south into northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The large
wildfires south of Reindeer Lake in Saskatchewan continue to emit
moderately dense to dense smoke which is currently moving the southwest.
Remnant smoke from these fires is moving to the east through central
Manitoba where it varies to dense smoke over Lake Winnipeg. The light
smoke continues to the east passing over the majority of Ontario and
into the southern region of Quebec where it dissipates as it approaches
the US border.

Southern Canada/North-Central US:
A detached area of light smoke extends from southern Saskatchewan and
Manitoba, across the US border into Montana, the Dakotas and northern
Nebraska. This may be remnant smoke from wildfires in Canada.

US East Coast:
The fires in southern Georgia continue to produce moderately dense to
dense smoke. The dense smoke is primarily near the fires with light
smoke extending north along the coast to southern North Carolina.

New Mexico:
The Las Conchas fire in northwestern New Mexico is generating moderately
dense to dense smoke which is moving north and east into Colorado
and Kansas.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
