DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0332Z July 15, 2011

Central/Southeast US:
Area of light smoke and other aerosols seen stretched from Iowa southeast
across most of the southeast U.S. and extending along coastlines of North
and South Carolinas/Georgia. Area of light smoke and other aerosols
is located along and to the south of a stationary frontal boundary.
Smoke from Kansas to Missouri likely remnant from fires in the Southwest
and Mexico, with wildfires in southeast Georgia/Florida panhandle
producing the smoke over much of the Southeast.

South-Central Arizona:
A relatively small area of light remnant smoke is seen moving eastward
across portions of south-central Arizona during the early evening hours.
Smoke may be from a fire burning across southwestern Arizona or from
small fire burning near the California/Mexico/Arizona border.

From Previous Discussion:

Canada:
Remnant light to moderate smoke lingers along the borders of
Alberta/Saskatchewan/Manitoba/Northwest Territories/Nunavut provinces
Wildfires in north-Central Alberta likely from wildfires still burning in
northern Alberta. Another smaller area moving over southern Hudson Bay
from fires in Manitoba/Ontario which are still producing moderate/heavy
dense smoke over central Ontario as well.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
