DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0345Z July 21, 2011

Central and Eastern Canada:
A large moderately dense to very dense smoke plume extends from eastern
Manitoba through western and central Ontario to extreme southern Quebec
into New York and New England and into the offshore waters of New England
and the Northern Mid Atlantic.  The smoke was visible this morning;
however, throughout the day, cloud cover began to dominate the area.
It is believed that the source of this smoke, the numerous wildfires in
western Ontario, continued to produce smoke throughout the evening even
though it was not visible on satellite imagery.

Central Utah/Nevada:
An area of light smoke moved eastward across central Utah this morning
and early afternoon. This is believed to be remnant smoke from the fire
that is currently burning in central California. During the evening
hours, another area of light smoke was visible in portions of central
and eastern Nevada north of Las Vegas.

Central Plains/Ohio River Valley/East Coast:
The ridge of high pressure dominating the country that is causing the
heat wave is also allowing pollution and other aerosols to circulate.
Haze and other aerosols were visible this evening rotating around an area
of high pressure centered over IL/IN. In addition to this, the frontal
boundary crossing through the Dakotas and Minnesota this evening pushed
aerosol to the east. This boundary was clearly visible in satellite
imagery tonight.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
