DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0330Z July 26, 2011

Canada:
Remnant smoke covers much of eastern Northwest Territories, central
Nunavut Territory, the northern Hudson bay, and northern Quebec today. The
remnant smoke has mainly originated from the wildfires that continue
to burn to the east of the Great Slave Lake. An elongated area of thin
density smoke stretches across all of the aforementioned areas while
moderate density smoke extends only partially across the northern area
of Hudson Bay. Locally very dense smoke is present near the source of
the fires and in a few patches over central Nunavut Territory.

North Central US:
A large wildfire in northwestern Wyoming is producing a broad area
of thin density smoke that extends from northern Wyoming east across
South Dakota and into southern Minnesota and then south across all of
Iowa and western Illinois. Moderate to thick density remnant smoke is
observed near much of the Wyoming-Montana border, central South Dakota,
southern Minnesota, and central Iowa.

Tennessee/Kentucky:
An aerosol of unknown composition and origin is visible in satellite
imagery this evening over much of Tennessee and Kentucky. While some
aerosol could be smoke from the wildfire in Wyoming, it is likely that
the mass is also composed of haze and pollution.

Alaska:
Two small patches of thin density remnant smoke were seen over
east central Alaska this morning, likely from two wildfires in that
region. Thick cloud cover has prevented the additional detection of
smoke this afternoon.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
