DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1830Z July 28, 2011

Quebec:
Cloud cover this morning is preventing smoke detection from the wildfires
east of James Bay.  It is likely these fires produced smoke throughout
the morning.

California/Nevada:
The Lion wildfire in Tulare County, CA continues to produce moderately
heavy smoke this morning. The smoke extends northward through Sacramento.
Remnant smoke is also moving northward through central Nevada, north of
Las Vegas.

Central US/Eastern US:
An area of aerosol with unknown composition or origin is present over
the central Mid-Atlantic region in the vicinity of the Carolinas. This
area likely contains urban pollution with a small component of smoke.

AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.

A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.

Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
