DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z July 30, 2011

California/Nevada/Oregon/Idaho:
The Lion wildfire in Tulare County, CA in Sequoia National Forest
continues to burn. New smoke from the fire is mostly not able to be
discerned due to extensive cloud cover over the burn site. However,
remnant smoke from yesterday and early today could be seen circulating
around an anticyclone and spreading across much of northern California
into southeast Oregon and northern Nevada and across southern Idaho
toward the Wyoming border.

Wyoming:
A large fire (Norton Point) in Fremont county in northwest Wyoming was
again producing an area of thick smoke spreading east across northern
Wyoming.

Florida:
Several fires over east central Florida this afternoon and evening
generated light to moderately dense smoke plumes which moved westward
across the state and approached the Gulf coast by sunset.

Northern Canada:
A couple of large wildfires were observed to be burning this
afternoon/evening over the eastern end of Great Slave Lake in the
southern Northwest Territories. However, cloud cover and limited
satellite data over the region this evening have precluded a detailed
smoke analysis. Some smoke was seen moving to the southeast but the full
extent of the smoke was unable to be determined.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
