DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0415Z August 6, 2011

Currently:

Southern and Northern Mississippi Valley/Southern Plains
An area of light residual smoke moving from the east is moving across
parts of western Mississippi, northeast Louisiana, large area of Arkansas,
southwest Missouri and combining with smoke from agricultural fires
burning over Oklahoma and Arkansas. The area of smoke could be larger,
but smoke is combining with aerosols throughout the region.

Northern Baja/Southern California/Western Arizona:
An area of unknown aerosols is moving across the California region and
east NE into western Arizona.

Earlier Today:

Canada:
Ontario – A wildfire near the Ontario/Manitoba border continued
to produce moderately dense to dense smoke overnight. Near the
source-point, the smoke moves to the south but it lifts northward further
away. Smoke is crossing over James Bay and enters extreme western Quebec.
Northwest Territories – A wildfire in the Northwest Territories
produced smoke which moved northward to the Arctic Ocean. It is likely
some remnant smoke is near Great Bear Lake.

Arizona:
An aerosol, which is likely remnant smoke, was visible this morning
moving northward throughout northwestern Arizona. It is likely this
smoke is from fires near the California/Baja California border.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
