DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z August 13, 2011

Mid-Atlantic Coast:
The Lateral West fire in the Great Dismal Swamp along the VA/NC boarder
continues to produce a large amount of moderately dense to locally dense
smoke. Besides the immediate vicinity of the fire over southeast Virginia
and northeast North Carolina, the smoke has covered much of southern
Virginia, spreading west to the Blue Ridge mountains and reaching to
Richmond. Extensive cloud cover over North Carolina makes the southern
extent of the smoke difficult to discern.

Wyoming to the Central Great Plains:
A fire in far N Fremont county on the southern flanks of the far SE
portions of the Absaroka Range in WY continues to emit smoke that
is generally drifting eastward across the state. Remnant smoke from
yesterday has continued to move to the east and has reached southeast
Iowa and adjoining Illinois.

South Central Canada:
two fires over far western Ontario near the Manitoba border were producing
light to moderately dense plumes of smoke that were drifting to the
southwest this evening. Remnant smoke from previous days was seen in
patches moving across southern Canada. Separate patches of light smoke
were seen over southern Manitoba, south central Saskatchewan and southeast
Alberta. The patches over Manitoba and Saskatchewan were drifting to
the west while the area in Alberta was lifting north.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
