DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1800Z August 15, 2011
Ontario/northern Great Lakes Region: Much of the western and southwestern areas of Ontario are covered by a large area of remnant thin to moderately dense smoke this morning. The smoke has originated from large fires in western Ontario near the Manitoba border. Additionally, two elongated bands of thin density smoke are observed in eastern Ontario, one in southeast Ontario beginning just south of James Bay and extending down over the far eastern corner of Lake Superior, and one over northern Lake Huron. Mid Atlantic coast: The Lateral West fire in the Great Dismal Swamp along the border of Virginia and North Carolina continues to burn and is producing an elongated area of remnant smoke. The plume over land is very dense, but as it moves out over the western Atlantic it disperses into an area of thin density smoke with an embedded strip of moderate density smoke. Idaho: Patches of thin density smoke are observed in southwest Idaho from wildfires that were likely ignited by a thunderstorm that passed through the area last night.
