DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1830Z August 16, 2011
Western Ontario: Large fires in far western Ontario are still burning as indicated by IR imagery this morning. Heavy cloud cover has prevented the detection of any smoke associated with the blazes. Mid Atlantic coast: The Lateral West fire in the Great Dismal Swamp along the border of Virginia and North Carolina continues to burn and is producing an elongated area of smoke that is traveling southeast over the far northeast corner of North Carolina and then east out over the western Atlantic. The plume appears to be very dense near the source of the fire and thins out to a moderate density before reaching the ocean. Idaho: Patches of thin to moderately dense smoke are present across southern Idaho this morning from several fires scattered throughout the southwest corner of the state. Currently the majority of the smoke is being produced by one large wildfire and the remnant plume is moving in the northwest direction, but not quite reaching the Oregon border. Louisiana Coast: An area of unknown aerosol mixed with thin clouds and a minimal contribution of smoke is observed in the Gulf of Mexico south of Louisiana. The aerosol is moving around a high pressure system located offshore east of the Texas coast. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/ml/land/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
