DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0245Z August 25, 2011

Montana/Wyoming through Northern/Central Plains to Midwest and
Mid-Atlantic region:
An very large and expansive area of remnant and some new smoke can be
seen this evening from central Montana/Wyoming southeastward into the
central Plains and then into the Mid-West/Great Lakes region and finally
stretching as far as the Mid-Atlantic states into Maryland/Virginia and
the Carolinas. This smoke is mostly moderately dense with some very dense
patches near the source points and through the central Plains states and
into northern Texas. The source points of this large area of smoke are
the large and numerous wildfires through Montana, Wyoming and northern
Idaho that have continued to burn over the past several days.

Gulf Coast:
An area of aerosol mixed with smoke from today's fires through the
southeastern U.S. and the Florida Panhandle could be seen from the
southeastern Louisiana coast eastward to just off the coast of western
Florida.

Southeast Coast/Eastern Florida:
Continue to see an area of what is believed to be Saharan dust along
the north and west side of Hurricane Irene in this evening's satellite
imagery. The dust was just starting to approach the coastline of eastern
Florida near sunset.

FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
