DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0115Z August 31, 2011
Currently: Eastern US (Mississippi Valley/Southeast/Mid-Atlantic/Gulf of Mexico: The light residual smoke seen earlier today across the above region can now be seen stretching farther north into central Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Also, a large fire in central Orleans county is producing moderately dense to dense smoke moving west across Lake Pontchartrain and neighboring counties stretching as far as East Baton Rouge county. Arizona: The dense smoke seen earlier today has stretched farther east into Arizona with light smoke now moving north into southern Utah. Montana/Wyoming/South Dakota/Nebraska: An area of residual smoke can be seen stretching across the above mentioned states. Moderately dense smoke stretches across northern Wyoming, a small section of southeast Montana into southern South Dakota and central Nebraska. Lighter smoke extends across a large section of southern Montana, most of eastern Wyoming, across most of southern South Dakota and parts of Nebraska. The residual smoke is from fires burning in Washington and Oregon. J Kibler Earlier Today: Eastern US: A large area of light smoke covers the east coast from southern Virginia south along the coast into northern Florida. From Florida, it continues west into the Gulf of Mexico, reaching the Texas coastline. The smoke is likely remnant smoke from the continued fires in the northwest mixed with agricultural burns in the lower Mississippi Valley as well as fires currently producing smoke in southern Georgia and the Florida panhandle. Northwest US: Numerous fires in north-central Oregon and south-central Washington State are continuing to generate light to dense smoke now extends across the northern half of Idaho and into western Montana. The smoke continues to move northeast towards Alberta and Saskatchewan. Arizona: Area of light to dense smoke covers much of western and northwestern Arizona. The smoke is likely remnant from fires in southern California and the Baja that produced smoke last evening.
