DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0330Z September 4, 2011

Pacific Northwest:
Heavy smoke is observed in the Cascade Mountain Range mainly from 4
large wildfires: 1) Northern California, on the border of Trinity and
Siskiyou counties, light density smoke is moving north into the far
southwest corner of Oregon, 2) East portion of Linn County, OR, smoke is
moving northwest and out over the Pacific ocean, 3) Hood River county,
OR, with this being the primary smoke producer, thick density smoke is
observed over counties to the north and west as well as over parts of
the coast/Pacific ocean, 4) Jefferson county, WA, this fire is producing
moderately dense smoke to the west southwest as far west as the coast.

Idaho/Montana/Wyoming:
Numerous large wildfires continue to burn in Idaho, western Montana,
and northwest Wyoming. Very dense remnant smoke is present near the
sources of the fires while light to moderate density smoke stretches
over much of central Idaho as far south as Gooding and Lincoln counties
and as far north as Mineral country in west central Montana. Smoke is
not being emitted in a uniform direction by all fires.

Central US/Great Lakes states/southeast US:
A large area of light remnant smoke from wildfires in the northwest
US as well as from fires in Texas and Oklahoma over the past week is
stretching from the Great Lakes region southwest across the central
plains and over much of Oklahoma and central Texas. The remnant smoke
is circulating about TS Lee's perimeter.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
