DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1515Z September 7, 2011

Northwest US/Northern Rockies/Northern and Central Great Basin/Central
and Northern Plains/Upper and Middle Mississippi Valley:
The wildfires burning across, northern/western Oregon, central Idaho and
western Montana have produced a large area of residual smoke stretching
from eastern Washington state and reaching sections of southern Michigan
and a large part of Illinois. Heaviest smoke stretches across a large
portion of central Idaho and a narrow plumes stretches from southeast
Montana into western/central South Dakota. Moderately dense smoke extends
over western/southern Montana, northern Wyoming, southwest North Dakota,
a large area of South Dakota (not NE sections of the state) into northeast
Nebraska, central sections of Iowa and reaching western Illinois.
The light smoke extends as far south as southern Illinois and as far
east as border Illinois/Indiana.

Minnesota/Wisconsin/Great Lakes/Southern Canada:
Residual smoke from fires burning in southern Manitoba, northern North
Dakota/Minnesota can be seen moving east northeast across parts of
northern Wisconsin and into southern Ontario reaching the Quebec border.

Texas:
An area of residual and new smoke is stretching across a large portion
of eastern Texas and extending into the northwest Gulf of Mexico and
parts of northeast Mexico. These wildfires are continuing to produce new
thick smoke. Currently the Bastrop County Complex is producing moderate
smoke based on early GOES-13/11 satellite imagery. The fires producing
the heaviest smoke are located in the northeast section of the state.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
