DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1830Z September 8 2011
Northwest US/Northern High Plains/Southwest Canada: A large area of smoke was present across most of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, portions of Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Nebraska. The smoke also extended northward over southern British Columbia and southern Alberta. Most of this smoke is from the numerous large wildfires in Idaho/Montana/Oregon yesterday/today and had become trapped along an old frontal boundary that reached from Alberta to Oklahoma. Smoke was moderately dense to dense across western Montana and central Idaho. Texas/Northern Mexico: Remnant smoke from several large wildfires in Texas yesterday could be seen over the south and east portions of Texas, extreme northeast Mexico, and the northwestern Gulf of Mexico. Some areas were of moderate density. This smoke was generally moving south/southeast. Midwest/Central Plains: Leftover detached smoke mainly from yesterday's agricultural fires over the Northern Plains and south central Canada was moving to the southwest across Minnesota, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri. Some fresh smoke from a fire burning this morning was present over northeast Minnesota. South Central Canada: Moderately dense to dense smoke stretched from east central Saskatchewan eastward across central Manitoba and northwest Ontario to James Bay. A large fire south of Reindeer Lake in east central Saskatchewan is the main cause of all this smoke.
