DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1745Z September 10 2011

Western Gulf of Mexico:
A broad area of light, remnant smoke remains in the western Gulf of Mexico
this morning. It is likely this smoke is from the numerous wildfires in
Texas and addition to the agricultural fires in the Mississippi River
Valley. The southern extent of this smoke is near the circulation of
TS Nate in the Gulf.

Minnesota:
The Pagami Creek wildfire continued to produce smoke overnight and this
morning. Within the past 24 hours, the winds shifted to the south and
moderately dense smoke is crossing the international border into Canada.

Pacific NW/Southern Canada:
A large area of light remnant smoke from the numerous wildfires in
Idaho and Montana extends from Oregon to southern Canada. These large
wildfires produced locally dense smoke overnight. Along with the fires
in Idaho and Montana, wildfires along the Cascades produced westward
moving smoke which moved into the Pacific Ocean.

Central Plains:
A ribbon of smoke was visible this morning extending from northern
Wisconsin to north-central Kansas. It is likely this smoke is from the
wildfire south of Reindeer Lake in Canada along with the wildfires in
the Pacific NW. A mid to upper level high pressure system is helping
to guide this smoke. Another ribbon of light smoke in Oklahoma and
Arkansas appears to have dissipated by 17Z.

Georgia/Florida:
Locally dense smoke was visible this morning in Ware County, Georgia
and Baker County, Florida from wildfires in the area.

Ontario:
Remnant smoke from the wildfire near Reindeer Lake moved across extreme
northwestern Ontario towards James Bay this morning.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
