DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1645Z September 18, 2011

UPDATE: A small area of light smoke was detected extending from northern
Florida into Apalachee Bay. The source of the smoke is likely the ongoing
fire in/near the Okefenokee Swamp in southeast Georgia.

Previous narrative:

No areas of remnant smoke or blowing dust were observed in satellite
imagery this morning. An extensive area of cloudiness over the entire
Mississippi Valley and over much of the Southeast US are hindering smoke
detection, especially any smoke that may have emanated from the Pagami
Creek fire in northeast Minnesota and a long term fire in southeast
Georgia in/near the Okefenokee Swamp.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.

  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
