DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z September 28, 2011

Ontario/Northern and Central Great Plains/Lower Mississippi Valley:
An area of light remnant smoke was seen in a broad arc extending from
southwest Hudson Bay through western Manitoba across western Minnesota,
the eastern Dakotas and Nebraska into central Kansas before curling
back to the southeast through central Oklahoma and northeast Texas and
over northern Louisiana. This expansive area of smoke is from previous
days fires, which are still ongoing, over Idaho/Montana and Wyoming. The
smoke is being deflected around a massive upper level low pressure system
spinning over southern Lake Michigan.

Wyoming into the Central Plains:
An area of light to moderately dense remnant smoke from yesterday evening
was moving to the southeast and stretched from eastern Wyoming into the
far northwest tip of Kansas.

Arizona:
An area of light to moderately dense smoke was moving to the west across
central Arizona. This smoke was from the Tanner fire in Gila county. There
was also an area of blowing dust observed that originated from gusty
thunderstorm winds between Phoenix and Tuscon. The blowing dust spread
to the north across the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Oregon:
An area of blowing dust was seen moving to the east from it's source
near Summer Lake in south central Oregon this evening.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
