DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z September 28, 2011

Quebec/Ontario/Western Great Lakes/Mid West
Another large and elongated area of remnant smoke can be seen in satellite
imagery. This smoke stretches from the southern part of the Hudson Bay
into central Ontario then southward through Minnesota/Wisconsin then
into the central and southern Mississippi Valley region. This smoke is
getting wrapped into the upper level low pressure system that is currently
spinning over southern Lake Michigan. Some of the smoke may have made it's
way further east but can not be seen due to extensive cloud cover. This
is all remnant from the large wildfires and some agricultural burns that
have been seen through Montana/Wyoming/Idaho/Pac NW.

Central and Southern Plains into northern Louisiana:
A thin area of smoke seen from southern Nebraska stretching southward
into northeastern Texas and northern Louisiana could be seen in this
morning's satellite imagery. This is most likely remnant smoke from large
fires out west and the numerous agricultural burns seen throughout the
northern plains and southern Saskatchewan/Manitoba.

Eastern Wyoming/Western Nebraska/Northeastern Colorado:
An area of light and moderately dense smoke was seen moving towards the
southeast through eastern Wyoming and into western Nebraska and eastern
portions of Colorado this morning and early afternoon. This area of
smoke is likely from the large wildfires that continue to burn through
northwestern Wyoming.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
