DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0400Z October 5, 2011
Lower Mississippi Valley: Numerous ag burns in southeast Missouri and eastern Arkansas, as well as some burns scattered throughout Louisiana and Mississippi are producing an area of thin density remnant smoke traveling in the westward direction. Areas close to the source are covered in moderate density smoke. The detached smoke extends as far west as central Arkansas. Central US: A broad area of thin, detached smoke is observed in central Nebraska and extends northward into southern South Dakota. The source of this smoke is from 3 large wildfires in central Nebraska, though a small contribution of the remnant smoke may be from the several recent wildfires in Montana/Wyoming/Idaho that has since tracked east. South Central Canada: Multiple areas of thin density smoke are seen in southern Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba this evening. The smoke that is observed to be moving northeast across southern Saskatchewan is likely from wildfires in the northwest US, while the smoke near the North Dakota/Saskatchewan border and the smoke in southern Manitoba is from fires in the immediate vicinity. The latter smoke is being emitted in the northwest direction. Ramirez THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/ml/land/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
