DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0400Z October 25, 2011
Pacific Northwest/British Columbia: Numerous wildfires are located throughout northern California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and B.C., but only a small fraction of those are emitting smoke. Plumes are seen near the sources of the fires but cloud cover is preventing the detection of smoke further downstream. It is inferred that remnant smoke is drifting almost due east. Lower Mississippi River Valley Several ag burns in the area are producing a very localized remnant area of light density smoke over far northeast Arkansas. Central Plains: Remnant light density smoke over northern Kansas and southern Nebraska is visible in satellite imagery this evening. It appears as though this smoke is days old and has originated from fires in either California or the Pacific Northwest. It's also possible that some other aerosols are mixed in with the plume. Ramirez THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/ml/land/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
