DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z January 28, 2012

South/Southeast US:
A handful of smoke producing fires are observed along the coasts of Texas
and Louisiana and in the Florida panhandle. Plumes in Texas are moving
inland in the NW direction and become detached within a few hours of the
respective blazes, dissipating a few hours after that. The small fires
in Louisiana are producing light density smoke that drifts offshore.

Texas Blowing Dust:
An area of blowing dust is visible around 1845Z near Lubbock becoming more
visible around 2000Z moving in the southeast direction stretching from
Midland to Haskell by 2245Z. Dust remains visible until sunset at 2315Z.

AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
