DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0000Z January 31, 2012
Currently: Southeast: Numerous small to moderate size fires are burning across sections of the southeast especially across Georgia and South Carolina. Most of the fires in these states are producing mainly light smoke with a few emitting moderately dense smoke. The smoke seen earlier today in the Gulf of Mexico and over central and east central Texas could not be seen this evening. Earlier Today: Southeast US Coast: Patches of remnant smoke were observed this morning east of northern Florida and southern Georgia from numerous fires yesterday in those states. Additional thin aerosol could be seen as well along the coast of the southeastern US but it may be more of a mixture of smoke and other unknown aerosols. Eastern Gulf of Mexico: Two medium sized areas of remnant smoke could be seen in the eastern Gulf just west of Florida and north of the Yucatan Peninsula. The smoke seen west of Florida is most likely from large amounts of fires in the southeast US over the past few days. The smoke seen north of the Yucatan Peninsula could be either from fires in Cuba or from fires in Florida. Texas: An area of thin smoke was seen over central and east central Texas left over from numerous fires that were burning in Texas and southern Louisiana yesterday.
