DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0130Z April 1, 2012

Western Gulf of Mexico:
Area of light residual smoke from fires in Central America was observed
moving north through the western Gulf of Mexico.

Mississippi Valley:
A large area of light residual smoke from yesterday's extensive
agricultural burns across the central Plains stretched from the
Minnesota-Canadian border south through Iowa, Missouri, and Arkansas.
NRL/Monterey Aerosol Modeling suggests that dust may also be contributing
to this haze.

Southern California/Arizona/Nevada/Utah/Southeast Idaho:
Large areas of dust cover portions of southern California, northeast
Arizona, much of Nevada and northwest Utah. Dust is particularly dense
across north and west central Nevada, northwestern Utah and southeastern
Idaho.

Nebraska/Kansas/Oklahoma:
As was the case yesterday, numerous agricultural burns centered in Kansas
have resulted in light to isolated moderate smoke plumes that have moved
generally towards the north and northeast.

From earlier today...

Southern/Central Mississippi Valley:
An area of light, remnant smoke can be seen extending across eastern
Oklahoma into southern Missouri, northern Arkansas and into extreme
western portions of Tennessee and Kentucky. This is likely due to the
numerous agricultural burns that were seen yesterday across this region
and the central Plains. Another area of embedded heavy smoke within the
aforementioned larger area is seen across north/central Arkansas. This
particular area looks to have been remnant from a large fire that was
burning yesterday and last night through central Arkansas.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
