DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0045Z April 11, 2012

Gulf of Mexico/Southeast Atlantic Coast:
There is a broad area of light remnant smoke stretching across much of
the north and central Gulf of Mexico and across northern and central
Florida into the Atlantic north of the Bahamas. This smoke is mostly
from the large fire burning in northeast Florida near the Georgia
border. There is an area of moderate to dense smoke extending from the
fire east-northeastward into the Atlantic. Another area of moderate
smoke is seen off the coast east of Cape Canaveral.

Mid Altantic:
Several fires were burning over western Virginia and generating light
to moderately dense smoke that was moving to the east across Virginia
and reaching the Chesapeake Bay.

Central and Northern Plains:
A large number of agricultural fires were seen burning from Kansas
northward across the Plains into southern Canada. Numerous individual
smoke plumes were noted associated with these fires and they were
gradually consolidating into a broader area.

Southwest:
An area of blowing dust ahead of a storm system moving into California
was seen over the deserts of southern California, southwest Arizona
and extreme northwest Mexico. The dust was lifting to the north across
western Arizona and into southern Nevada.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
