DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1415Z April 11, 2012

Gulf of Mexico/Southeast Atlantic Coast:
A broad area of light remnant smoke, with embedded patches of
moderately-dense smoke, still remains across portions of northeastern
Florida peninsula and then stretching east over the Atlantic. Area of
smoke is located ahead of a surface cold frontal boundary that extends
across central Florida and then northeast from east coast of Florida
over the western Atlantic. Smoke is due in large part from a rather
large wildfire (County Line wildfire) burning in northeast Florida near
the Georgia border. New smoke from the County Line wildfire is quickly
spreading south and east per mid-morning satellite imagery.

The Gulf of Mexico does appear a bit hazy this morning and some remnant
smoke may still be lingering across the northern half of of gulf, but
no real well-defined boundaries can be noted to be able to analyze. The
evening GOES-EAST pass over the area should provide a better view given
more favorable sun-angle present at that time of day.

Central and Northern Plains:
An elongated area of aerosol is seen stretching across the Central and
Northern Plains. The aerosol is believed to be predominantly elevated
dust from Asia. It is also possible that some remnant dust may be mixed
in with the dust from yesterday's fires that were burning across the
northern plains.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
