DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z April 15, 2012

Western Gulf of Mexico:
Remnant light smoke from the seasonal agricultural burning in southeast
Mexico and Central America was seen this morning over the western Gulf
of Mexico, mainly west of 94W. This smoke area was likely also being
drawn further northward into eastern Texas and western Louisiana ahead
of a cold front but cloud cover was inhibiting detection.

Central and Southern Plains:
Remnant blowing dust from yesterday's large event has been lofted and
is seen stretching from the Big Bend area of Texas north northeastward
through central Texas and Oklahoma into eastern Kansas, eastern Nebraska
and western Iowa. This dust area then becomes obscured in cloud cover. At
1500Z the back edge of the dust was roughly along a line from San
Angelo Texas to Alton and Clinton Oklahoma to Salina Kansas to Hebron
and Wayne Nebraska.

Strong winds gusting over 40 mph in western Texas behind a frontal system
are kicking up new areas of fresh blowing dust. Moderately dense dust
from approximately along a line from Seminole to Lubbock to Plainview
to Canadian Texas. This area of dust was moving to the east.

AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
