DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z April 23, 2012

Texas/Mexico:
Remnant smoke from agricultural and wildfires in Sinaloa, western Durango,
southern Chihuahua and Nayarit continues to remain in northern Mexico
and also the Gulf of California region. A fire in Coahuila has a smoke
plume extending northward into the United States. The smoke is entering
Texas in Brewster County and the Big Bend National Park.

Upper Midwest/Great Lakes region:
An aerosol of uncertain type was seen just after sunrise over Ontario,
Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, and Arkansas.
A much denser line of this aerosol moved southward over Lake Superior
and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The source is likely from Asia
but it is not certain whether this is blowing dust or smoke from fires
in eastern Siberia.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
