DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0100Z April 30, 2012
Uncertain aerosols: NE Gulf of Mexico: A swath of unknown though likely remnant smoke from SE fires throughout the week has remained relatively stationary or drifted slowly south then east across SC into S GA and the Eastern portion of the FL panhandle into the NE GoM...along the periphery of a well defined cyclone over S FL. The area is most dense across the FL. US West: Similar to last night, a large area of the US West is being affected by mid to upper level aerosols which according to aerosol forecast models could be traced back to Asian dust/smoke. Unlike last night, the density appears to be a bit less tonight but is heaviest over CA. Very low density haze can be seen over AZ, NV, and E OR. Gallina THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE: JPEG: http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/ml/land/hms.html GIS: http://www.firedetect.noaa.gov/viewer.htm KML: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/FIRE/kml.html ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS REGARDING THIS PRODUCT SHOULD BE SENT TO SSDFireTeam@noaa.gov
