DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0300Z May 07, 2012

Smoke:
Florida into the Atlantic:
The County Line fire and another fire near Baldwin (west of Jacksonville)
continued to produce smoke plumes this evening. The smoke was mainly
light density.

Northern Mexico and Texas:
Fires continued to burn throughout the day in Mexico in Coahuila,
southern Chihuahua, Durango and Sinaloa states. Smoke plumes extended
east of the fires but heavy cloud cover prevented the detection of the
smoke's leading edge.

Louisiana:
Numerous fires in West Feliciana, Concordia and Avoyelles Parishes
produced localized areas of moderately dense smoke. These detached
areas of smoke moved to the northwest by sunset.

Blowing dust:
Sonora and Arizona:
Blowing dust at the surface, originating in Sonora (Mexico) west of the
city of Caborca, began around 06/2115Z. This dust moved the northeast and
entered the United States in Arizona around Santa Cruz and Pima Counties.
The dust crossed the border around 07/0115Z which was just before sunset.

Pacific Coast and Mountain West:
An aloft aerosol, most likely Asian dust, was visible on satellite imagery
around sunset along the West Coast. A denser area of this aerosol was
viewed in Idaho and Montana and most likely moved south from Alberta
during the day.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
