DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1415Z May 09, 2012
Texas: Area of mostly thinly dense remnant smoke is observed across portions of southeast Texas and confined close to the Gulf of Mexico coastline. It is likely that area of remnant smoke extends further east across western portions of the western Gulf of Mexico. GOES-West does not provide imagery far enough east to confirm this and the angle from GOES-East is not optimal in the morning. A better look over the entire Gulf of Mexico should come towards evening from GOES-East. Area of smoke is likely from numerous fires burning in the Yucatan, Central America and northwest Mexico. Central Plains: An area of remnant thin dust is seen this morning stretching from eastern Colorado southeast across Kansas, northern half of Oklahoma before becoming more east-northeast across southern Missouri, northern Arkansas and into southern Illinois. It is believed that this aerosol originated from Asia. It is seen drifting slowly toward the south and east. Southwest U.S./Northwest Mexico: Relatively small area of unknown aerosol is seen swirling in a counterclockwise spin over portions of southwest Arizona/northwest Mexican state of Sonora. Aerosol may be dust from Asia.
