DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0245Z May 10, 2012

Eastern Dakotas/Minnesota:
Numerous smoke plumes were evident in satellite imagery moving off to the
north-northeast from many fires which were analyzed across the eastern
Dakotas and western Minnesota.

Southern Florida/Cuba:
Thin density remnant smoke was visible again during the day extending from
western Cuba northward over a portion of the Florida Keys and extreme
southern Florida. It is believed that this is remnant smoke from fires
in Cuba.

Texas/Western Gulf of Mexico:
The area of mostly thin density remnant smoke which was observed across
portions of southeast Texas offshore over the western Gulf of Mexico
earlier this morning was still visible during the late afternoon and
evening. It is likely that area of remnant smoke covers more area over
the Gulf of Mexico, southern Texas, and northern Mexico, but cloudiness in
the region interfered with additional smoke detection. This area of smoke
is likely from numerous fires burning in the Yucatan, Central America,
and northwestern Mexico.

Earlier This Morning...
Central Plains:
An area of remnant thin dust is seen this morning stretching from
eastern Colorado southeast across Kansas, northern half of Oklahoma
before becoming more east-northeast across southern Missouri, northern
Arkansas and into southern Illinois.
It is believed that this aerosol originated from Asia. It is seen
drifting slowly toward the south and east.

Southwest U.S./Northwest Mexico:
Relatively small area of unknown aerosol is seen swirling in a
counterclockwise spin over portions of southwest Arizona/northwest
Mexican state of Sonora. Aerosol may be dust from Asia.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
