DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0330Z June 3, 2012

Canada:
Wildfires in northern Alberta, northern Saskatchewan, and the Northwest
Territories continued to burn throughout the evening hours. The leading
edge of the smoke extended as far southeast as Minnesota and remained west
of an area of low pressure north of the Great Lakes. Moderately dense
to very dense smoke extended from northern Alberta to central Manitoba.
Cloud cover also hindered smoke detection this evening.

Southwestern US:
Detached, remnant smoke from the Whitewater-Baldy wildfire continues
to cover much of the desert southwest. The heaviest smoke moved to the
northeast throughout the day and evening. A new fire near the Utah/Nevada
border (Lincoln County, NV) produced heavy smoke which moved southward
over the Grand Canyon in northern Arizona. Cloud cover in New Mexico
also made smoke detection difficult.

California:
A wildfire in Tulare County produced moderately dense smoke which moved
generally to the south throughout the evening hours.

Mexico:
From earlier:
Numerous fires continue to burn through the states of Sonora, Chihuahua,
Sinaloa, and Durango and are producing a broad area of remnant light
density smoke through northern Durango and Sinaloa.

THIS TEXT PRODUCT IS PRIMARILY INTENDED TO DESCRIBE SIGNIFICANT
AREAS SMOKE ASSOCIATED WITH ACTIVE FIRES AND SMOKE WHICH HAS BECOME
DETACHED FROM THE FIRES AND DRIFTED SOME DISTANCE AWAY FROM THE SOURCE
FIRE..TYPICALLY OVER THE COURSE OF ONE OR MORE DAYS. AREAS OF BLOWING DUST
ARE ALSO DESCRIBED. USERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO VIEW A GRAPHIC DEPICTION OF
THESE AND OTHER PLUMES WHICH ARE LESS EXTENSIVE AND STILL ATTACHED TO
THE SOURCE FIRE IN VARIOUS GRAPHIC FORMATS ON OUR WEB SITE:

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
